Plotting a Novel

Plotting a Novel

Jeez, it’s been a while since I’ve written anything here. It’s been an eventful few months, though. I’m up to my neck in my MFA coursework, I trained for and ran a half marathon, and I almost got a third dog named Kanye (don’t worry, he found a home), which might just be why I haven’t done much here lately. Another thing I did, though, was plot out my novel-in-progress, I Could Have Lied. You might be asking, “Adam, why…

Fort Augustus

Fort Augustus

I’m still bummed that my vacation’s over (yeah yeah, I’ve been back three months), so I’ve decided to jot down another story. I didn’t swim in any other lochs, though, so it’s all downhill if I keep writing about these things The second leg of our Scotland trip took us to Fort Augustus, a tiny town on Loch Ness that we never planned on visiting. We meant to stay in Fort William, which is about an hour southwest, but, well,…

I swam in a loch.

I swam in a loch.

My friends and I went on a ten-day trip to Scotland last month, and now that I’m back I pretty much want to tell everyone about it. That would require a lot of typing, though, so I’m just gonna write about this stupid thing I did. That picture up there is Eilean na Moine, which is where Dumbledore’s grave was filmed in the Harry Potter movies. We always planned on visiting it, and my brother and I always joked about…

Books + Brews: Californium and beer X-tacy

Books + Brews: Californium and beer X-tacy

I used to do this thing where I’d pair books and beers, but life got in the way for a while and I had to stop doing it. Things have freed up lately, though, so I figure it would be fun to get back at it. To hitch my wagon back on the horse, so to speak, even if I was the one to unhitch it in the first place. I gotta be honest. I don’t really understand that saying. I…

This is Bert.

This is Bert.

A little less than a year ago, I went out for pizza and scribbled down a story featuring Bert, my brother’s kinda overweight, very flighty cat. It’s about other things, sure — marriage, awkward conversations with your parents, etc. — but Bert’s pretty much what bring it together. Anyway, the great folks over at Dime Show Review recently gave the story — titled “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” (yes, after the Wilco song) — a home, so feel free to give…

Fried Chicken, Divorce, and Ice Cream

Fried Chicken, Divorce, and Ice Cream

‘ey-oooo! I have a new story out over at 1:1000 about fried chicken and divorce and the healing powers of ice cream sundaes. If you have a minute, feel free to give it a look. Better yet, while you’re there, check out their collection and all the fun things they have to offer. The journal’s a neat concept; they have a collection of photos they’ve sourced from different photographers, and writers are encouraged to pick one and write a 1,000(ish)-word story…

2016 in Review (Or, Why I’ll Miss Carrie Fisher)

2016 in Review (Or, Why I’ll Miss Carrie Fisher)

I originally wrote a year in review a week ago, but I didn’t have a lot to say about anything. And then Carrie Fisher died, and I found myself confused and upset and really kind of pissed off. This isn’t a discredit to everyone else who died in 2016 — there are a lot, and they’re all tragic, really — but, to me at least, Carrie Fisher meant a lot. Not just as Princess Leia, but as an altogether badass…

3 Lessons I’ve Learned From My MFA Program

3 Lessons I’ve Learned From My MFA Program

Things haven’t quite gone according to plan lately.  My MFA work came to a halt a couple weeks ago when my funding didn’t work out, so I’ve decided to take a little time to reflect on what I’ve learned so far. With my newfound free time, I’ve realized that there are a lot of things I wish I knew about MFAing (which I’ve decided is a word). Having been off for a couple weeks now, I figure here is as good a…

Brewery Review: Old Louisville Brewery in Louisville, KY

Brewery Review: Old Louisville Brewery in Louisville, KY

I’m a sucker for Louisville breweries. When my wife and I started searching for a place to live a few years back, Louisville quickly made it to the top of our list. I’m not going to say that the breweries are the reason we moved here, but the blossoming craft beer scene in Kentucky certainly didn’t hurt. What I like most about it is that the breweries don’t just have their own identity, but one that’s specific to something special…

Books + Brews: What to Drink and Read for August 2016

Books + Brews: What to Drink and Read for August 2016

Wow. Summer went by quickly. Fear not, however. With the beginning of August comes another Books + Brews, your monthly low-down on what’s worth reading and drinking. Whether you’re headed back to school (and appropriately aged) or just getting ready to face Fall’s onslaught of pumpkin beers, take a minute or two to check out my beer and book recommendations. This month’s are courtesy of my recent trip to Asheville! August’s Brew: ESB, Green Man Brewery (Extra Special Bitter, 5.5%,…
